Improving management consists of meeting forage requirements for vigorous growth and persistence. Key components are fertilization, defoliation, and irrigation. In addition to increasing quantity and quality of forage, improved management can change the seasonal distribution of production and may change species composition; allowing the species benefited by the changes to compete more effectively for existing resources (sunlight, water, nutrients).
