An effective tall fescue management program begins with selecting an appropriate cultivar or blend (two or more cultivars). Each year, primarily due to an increasing number of cultivars and the availability of regional NTEP data, tall fescue seed blends are formulated for specific geographic zones. Names of cultivars (such as Arid 3, Plantation, Rebel Sentry, and Southern Choice II), blends (such as Confederate Blend, Transition Blend, and Southern Gold), and mixtures (such as Summer Stress Mix) often reflect areas of adaptation and primary marketing regions. Local extension agricultural agents, horticultural agents, or turf specialists usually maintain lists of cultivars satisfactory for their region.
