Whenever reseeding is contemplated, a reliable source of high-quality, weed-free seed of high germination and of the cultivar best adapted to the region (see Chapter 3) should be employed. If a cultivar with a novel, nontoxic endophyte is selected, great care must be taken in storage of the seed under controlled conditions before seeding to ensure viability of the novel endophyte. Selecting an E- cultivar carries more risk of reduced persistence; therefore, such cultivars are to be used only where drought stress, competition from other plants, and pest loads are not severe, and when managed under lax defoliation.
