Soil fertility and acidity should be adjusted as indicated by the results of soil tests on representative samples taken from the depth of soil cultivation. The soil pH should be adjusted with agricultural limestone to at least 5.5. Soil test levels for P, K, and other nutrients should be corrected if needed with appropriate amounts of fertilizer to at least medium levels. Sufficient N should be applied to ensure vigorous tillering and root development for the first growing season, usually 25 to 50 kg/ha.
