Before a decision is made to destroy an existing stand and replace it with an endophyte free (E-) or a novel nontoxic endophyte tall fescue (see Chapter 20) many factors should be considered. In particular, the producer must be aware that the treated area will not produce feed for several months, sometimes more than 1 yr; this will have impact on herd maintenance and size and animal marketing. If the area to be reseeded is steep, measures must be taken to minimize soil erosion (Carreker et al., 1977). It is likely that there will be volunteer endophyte infected tall fescue (E+) from seed shattered in previous years or from surviving crowns or roots; these will have to be controlled before re-establishment.
