Unlike in the United States, it is recommended in Australia and New Zealand that legume seed be mixed with tall fescue seed and sown at the same time. White, subterranean (T. subterraneum L.), and red clovers (T. pratense L.) are all compatible with tall fescue. Lucerne (= alfalfa, Medicago sativa L. subsp. sativa) can compete severely with tall fescue plants for soil moisture unless there is good summer rainfall or irrigation. The most suitable legume for mixing with Mediterranean tall fescue is subterranean clover. Where tall fescue is used in salt-affected soils, the inclusion of strawberry clover (T. fragiferum L.) is strongly recommended.
