"How much N should I apply?" is typically the first question managers ask when fertilization is mentioned. Most pastures, when fertilized, receive relatively low amounts of N, even though research has shown that tall fescue can respond to N fertilization at high rates (Wilkinson and Mays, 1979). The amount of N that can be applied economically to tall fescue will depend on many factors, including the procedures used for harvesting the forage, the presence or absence of legumes, and the current and expected future moisture conditions.
