Morphological characters that serve to group members of this subgenus are: leaf blades usually rolled, lemma rounded, ovary hairy or glabrous, glumes shorter than adjacent lemma. The new shoots are intravaginal (giving rise to a densely caespitose form) or extravaginal. Lemmas usually are awned. Leaf sheath auricles are absent, or sometimes short erect extensions of the leaf sheath margins.
