The effects of E+ fescue are reduced greatly if mares are withdrawn from E+ pastures 30 to 40 d before the date of expected foaling (Taylor, 1993; Brendemuehl et al., 1994a). However, most veterinarians recommend removal of mares from E+ pastures from 30 to 90 d before expected foaling. With this management approach, red-bag and the other signs of fescue toxicosis are minimized substantially.
