Oregon grown perennial ryegrass is found in home lawns, golf course fairways and roughs; athletic fields, parks and pastures from very cool to subtropical regions. Perennial ryegrass can germinate in less than 7 days, and establish quickly in poor and compacted soils. Perennial ryegrass is wear and abuse tolerant, and mixes well with bluegrass and the fine fescues for premium turf. Perennial ryegrass tillers rapidly, crowding out weeds and competitive plants.
Perennial ryegrass is the most easily and often improved of the cool-season grasses. Recent genetic improvements are darker color; denser, and reduced vertical growth, plus natural disease resistance. In some varieties, the inclusion of endophyte fungus provides natural insect resistance and drought tolerance.
Pasture-type perennial ryegrass establishes a permanent pasture in a variety of soils and climates.
As a pasture or for green chop or hay, perennial ryegrass is nutritious and palatable. Breeding improvements have reduced or eliminated endophyte levels in pasture varieties for better animal health. Ryegrass recovers quickly from grazing and survives trampling.
