Orchardgrass is a highly palatable, shade tolerant, widely adapted perennial forage grass high in feed value and yield.
For best results, orchardgrass requires timely fertilization and grazing or cutting. There are many improved varieties of orchardgrass with early, medium or late maturation. When blended, different maturation times will provide adequate yield over a lengthy season. Early and medium, or intermediate, maturing varieties produce excellent spring and rotational grazing. Later maturing varieties are good for green chopping or silage, and less competitive when grown with alfalfa or clover.
Spring and fall fertilization is necessary for the production of lush foliage. Application should take place after the first cutting or grazing. In addition to nitrogen, orchardgrass requires phosphate and potash for top production. Orchardgrass will grow in poor soils, but performs best in moderate to well drained pastures. Most Oregon varieties have very good winter hardiness. For best production, adequate timely rainfall, or irrigation is required.
Oregon grown orchardgrass is an excellent choice when establishing a high producing pasture for meat, wool and milk producing animals.
