Bluegrass is used in medium to high maintenance areas like golf course fairways, roughs, industrial parks and home lawns. Kentucky bluegrass is often mixed with perennial ryegrass and fine fescue for excellent turf which establishes rapidly, has some low maintenance qualities and added shade tolerance. Kentucky bluegrass is sometimes mixed with turf-type tall fescue at 5 to 10 percent by weight.
The underground rhizome system unique to Kentucky bluegrass is useful in droughty, cold, and high stress areas. The underground carbohydrate reserve helps plants recover after dormancy or turf injury. This extensive root network holds turf together on athletic fields, parks and for sod production.
Improved Kentucky bluegrasses offer dark, rich color and improved disease resistance to its other qualities. For a luxurious permanent turf, include Oregon grown bluegrass.
